What could cause a squeaking noise when you press the clutch, but in comes from outside, not inside the cabin?

So I rolled the windows down driving home last night, and I noticed that it sounded like my clutch pedal was squeaking. When I rolled them back up the noise went away.

So I’m assuming it’s not the pedal itself, but the slave cylinder or fork thingy.

Is it a sign of a potentially serious issue or no? Because if it’s just a squeak and nothing more, I probably won’t bother with it, but I’d like to know if it could somehow be a precursor to clutch or slave cylinder failure.

Throw out bearing starting to go?

Old throwout bearing imo. My Mini does the same thing, has been for at least the last 20k miles. A specialist shop told me its fine, its just old.

2 cars that had a bad bearing made the sqeak all the time, not just when the press was put in.

Probably not cylinder failure, nor throwout bearing, but could be the pivot ball or something of that kind...or a portion of the linkage to the cylinder more exposed to the engine compartment than the interior. Assuming, of course, that the clutch is actually hydraulic as you state - mechanical linkages without a cable have more than enough pivots to go bad.

I assume not a concentric slave cylinder, as it doesn’t have linkage to go “squeak”. Without knowing the vehicle, I wouldn’t know whether it’s something like a fork end on the cylinder or something like a ball end.

If it’s a pivot ball up inside the bellhousing, it could be a giant pain to get lubricant on... but it would also be less likely possible to hear.

Sounds like your bearkngs were completely shot considering the throw out bearing does nothing unless the clutch is disengaged.

Clutch pedal bushing. Replaced mine with a needle bearing in the mr2

I’m, going to guess it’s the “externally-mounted, clutch-actuated squeaker.” But I’m not an SAE mechanic, or anything...

Subarus like to do this:

That being said I don’t know what you drive. But o n these the forks are shitty so the pivot ball can punch through the fork or the fork will just crack around the pivot ball.

It’s a ‘01 Hyundai Accent, I feel like I should be worried. I’ll probably take a look at it to make sure it’s not cracked or anything.
